Registered Nicks

These instructions can teach you how to register your nickname on the ADC Chat Server. By using a registered nickname, it ensures that nobody else can use it but you. This is required by all chat room operators (aka "ops") for security reasons.  If you have any questions about these instructions, please send email to Will Guggenheim.

How to register your nickname on the ADC Chat Server

  1. Connect to the ADC Chat Server
There are two methods to connect to the ADC Chat Server. One is by using our Java Chat program and the other is to use an IRC client, such as mIRC.

  2. Change your nickname to the nickname you want to register
You can change your nickname by typing /nick followed by the nickname you want to use. For example, if you wanted to change your nickname to John, you would type:

    /nick John

  3. Choose a password for your registered nickname
To prevent people from using your registered nickname, you will need to assign it a password. Ideally, this password would be easy to remember, yet hard for others to hack. The password should also be at least four characters long. Be sure to write down your password, in case you forget it

  4. Register your nickname
To register your nickname, you'll need to use the following command:

    /nickserv register <password> <email address>

This command can be typed anywhere on the chat server. You will need to replace <password> with your chosen password, and replace <email address> with your actual email address. For example, if I wanted to register my nickname using "heaven" as my password, I would type:

    /nickserv register heaven WillG@after-death.com

After you have typed this command correctly, you will receive a confirmation message that your nickname has been successfully registered.

How to use your registered nickname on the ADC Chat Server

When you connect to the ADC Chat Server using your registered nickname, you will be asked to enter your password using the /pass command. If you do not type this command within 60 seconds, you may be disconnected from the chat server. The /pass command can be typed anywhere, using the following format:

/pass <password>

Using my example above, I would type:

/pass heaven

How to configure mIRC with your registered nickname's password

If you are using mIRC as your IRC client, you can configure it to automatically enter your registered nickname's password for you. Here's how to do it:

  1. Load mIRC

  2. Click on the File menu, then on Setup

  3. In the Setup window, select "ADC Chat Server" in mIRC's drop-down list of IRC chat servers
(Note: If you do not have "ADC Chat Server" listed, please see the mIRC Help page.)

  4. Click the Edit button

  5. In the Edit window, click in the Password box and type your registered nickname's password

  6. Click the OK's to finish
